Olaplex No. 4D is a non-aerosol dry shampoo that refreshes hair between washes while providing volume and incorporating the brand's bond-building technology.


The product cleanses the scalp and absorbs excess oil without white residue or buildup.

Product innovation


The key innovation is the integration of Olaplex's patented bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate (bond-building technology) into a dry shampoo format. The formula uses ultrafine rice starch as the main oil-absorbing agent instead of traditional talc or aluminum starch. The product also features a proprietary "Detox Complex" that contains rambutan seed extract to neutralise environmental pollutants on the scalp and hair.

No. 4D addresses the growing consumer concern about scalp health and the potential negative impacts of traditional dry shampoos. Its competitive advantage stems from positioning as a treatment product rather than merely a styling convenience, with claims of actually improving hair health with continued use. The non-aerosol format also appeals to environmentally conscious consumers seeking alternatives to traditional propellant-based products.




The concept emerged from Olaplex's expansion beyond its core salon-oriented repair products into daily maintenance categories.


The product development focused on creating a formula that would maintain the brand's reparative DNA while solving common dry shampoo complaints like white residue, buildup, and drying effects on the scalp. The product underwent extensive testing to ensure compatibility with colour-treated and chemically processed hair.

The product aligns with the "skinification of haircare" trend identified in Mintel's 2022 Haircare Report*, which noted that products addressing scalp health grew by 43% year-over-year.


According to NPD Group data, prestige dry shampoo sales increased by 19% in 2022, outpacing growth in other haircare categories. The non-aerosol format also capitalised on sustainability trends, with NielsenIQ reporting that 66% of consumers expressed preference for environmentally friendly packaging in personal care products.
