This fan-fave Serum is a hybrid skincare product that combines the benefits of a toner and a serum in one step. The formula targets multiple concerns including pore appearance, oil control, texture improvement, and dark spot reduction.

Product innovation

The innovation lies in the product's unique texture technology, creating a viscous "fat water" consistency that applies like a serum without requiring cotton pads. The formula features Barbados cherry extract (rich in vitamin C), niacinamide, witch hazel, and Japanese raisin tree extract. The product uses the trademarked PoreRefine Technology™ that combines astringent botanical extracts with oil-controlling polymers.

Fat Water addresses the consumer desire for simplified skincare routines without sacrificing efficacy.

Its competitive advantage derives from its multifunctional formulation that eliminates the need for separate toner and serum steps, appealing to time-conscious consumers. The inclusive formulation, designed to work across all skin tones and types, also aligns with Fenty's brand equity in diversity.

The product concept emerged from Rihanna's personal skincare philosophy of maximising results while minimising steps.

The development was focused on creating a specific texture that could deliver the benefits of multiple products while providing a unique sensorial experience. According to the brand's managers, the formula underwent extensive testing across diverse skin tones to ensure it addressed common concerns without causing hyper-pigmentation.

Trend

The product aligns with the "skincare minimalism" trend identified in Mintel's 2021 Beauty and Personal Care Trends report, which noted that 54% of US consumers expressed interest in multifunctional skincare products.

Additional, based on NPD Group data, hybrid skincare products saw a 37% growth in sales during 2021, outpacing single-function categories. The product also capitalised on the "skip-care" trend that originated in Korea, with Euromonitor reporting that products combining multiple steps grew by 46% globally between 2020-2022.
